What Is the Round the Island Race?
The Round the Island Race is an iconic one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight – one of the most anticipated sailing events in the UK. It was first held in 1931 and has grown from a small local contest to one of the world’s largest yacht races, attracting over a thousand boats and thousands of sailors from across the UK and beyond.
It’s truly a race for all – welcoming seasoned racers, cruising sailors, families, and first-time participants alike.
A Rich Racing Legacy
Since its inception in the early 1930s, the Round the Island Race has become a celebrated event in the global sailing calendar. It began with just a few dozen boats and now regularly hosts well over a thousand participants – from amateur crews to experienced professionals.
Over the years, sailors from all over the world have flocked to this race, drawn by its history, community spirit, and exhilarating challenge. With its mix of tactical sailing and beautiful waters, it’s a must-do event for anyone passionate about life under sail.
The Course
The race covers approximately 50 nautical miles circumnavigating the Isle of Wight. The course traditionally starts and finishes in Cowes, heading westward past iconic landmarks such as:
- The Needles Lighthouse
- St Catherine’s Point
- Bembridge Ledge Buoy
- Across the Solent back to Cowes
Competitors set off in staggered starts from early morning, and the route provides both exhilarating sailing and stunning coastal scenery.
